Big League Advance made $30M off one Fernando Tatis Jr. deal

Shaan describes Big League Advance, which signs income-share agreements with minor leaguers (e.g. $350K for 8% of future earnings), betting analytically on who becomes a star. When Tatis signed a $340M deal with the Padres, BLA reportedly made $30 million.

So he signed a $340 million deal with the Padres. And the interesting thing that came out of that was that this company that I had never heard of called Big League Advance made $30 million off of that deal.

The 'predatory' ISA that turned out fine: $360K for 10%

Shaan recounts a player who sued Big League Advance over a deal giving up 10% of future earnings for $360,000, calling it predatory. But he only earned $1.2M in his career, so he paid out just $120K — a profitable deal for him — and dropped the suit.

they got sued by a player because they offered him $360,000 for 10% of his future earnings.. And then he, you know, he tried to sue them being like, oh shit, that was like a predatory deal. I didn't want to give up 10% of my, all my future earnings for just $360K. But in actuality, the guy only made $1.2 million in his career. So it actually turned out to be a profitable deal.
