Shaan's five voices in the head: quiet them and what's left is you
Building on Sam's 'treat your thoughts as a roommate' idea from The Untethered Soul, Shaan describes five inner voices, Inside Out style, including the Critic (a David Goggins who is never satisfied) and the protective Mother. Each has a role, but the real self only becomes audible when they quiet down, which is why meditation, sleep and therapy help.
“And then at the end of it, if you're able to hush up all these voices and get them to go back to their room for a little bit, the thing that's left, that's you. The last voice is you. That's the self. And the problem is it's so noisy in there because these other voices are constantly chirping that it's hard to hear what you truly think, what you truly want, because it sounds so easy. Well, you should just do what you want. Most people don't even know.”
